Providers tell their customers if their network requires a specific MTU value—numbers like 1492 (the maximum PPPoE supports) or 1480 are common. Home routers support an option to set the MTU size manually when needed. Forum discussion: I note most ppl state MTU of 1488 is best, but I note throughput drops when I set everything to 1488, and goes back to the better throughput when I reset back to 1500. When you are testing this, start with the values suggested above, if you get replies, great, increase the MTU value. When you get “Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.” Rather than replies, your MTU is too high now, so lower it and you can get the MTU set to the absolute ceiling (where +/- 1 will reply / fragment-out).
By Jon Stefansson. The Maximum Transmission Unit, or MTU, settings on a computer modem dictate the size in bytes of the largest protocol unit the network can handle. Changing the MTU settings of your computer network may help resolve software problems caused by latency or lag times. The procedure usually involves gradually reducing the MTU size until there is no fragmentation necessary.

NOTE: The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) of Linksys routers is 1500. Since dial up uses a default MTU of 576 bytes you will not have the same problems as broadband. If you have problems with both broadband and dial up access then the problem is probably something else. Summary One of the easy and most accurate ways to test for optimum MTU is to do a simple DO S P ing test. You will simply send out ping requests and progressively lower your packet size until the packet no longer needs to be fragmented.
