My VPN is connected but I cannot browse the Internet, why

OK, so I just purchased a new laptop and have to connect it to the internet. Bought a router, installed it and hooked it all up, my laptop detects internet fine and works dandy. Only problem is, that my desktop computer that connected to a wired modem, which now has the NEW router connected to it, will not detect the internet connection. I've tried to re-install it from the original disc – it tells me the installation was successful, but when I try to add it to my devices list, it can't be found. I'm connecting to the internet okay and the printer wireless indicator is on. I've been at it all day and tearing my hair out. Please help. (I'm on Windows 7, if that's relevant If so, that would explain why you can't connect to the internet via the hotspot. The prepaid unlimited plan doesn't include the mobile hotspot feature. There was something on the connection itself that prevented the new router from activating, once the fios tech reset my internet connection (and after explaining the issue to him) he was well aware of the problem of tracert dropping after iad8.alter.net (i didnt even tell him where it stopped as he knew it right off the top of his head).
